The temple is situated about 3000 feet above sea level and is open to people belonging to all faiths. The shrine is visited by male pilgrims after observing celibacy for 41 days, and children. To the east of the sanctum sanctorum is a shrine, the Vavarunada, dedicated to Lord Ayyappan’s friend Vavar. Ayyapan and Vavar’s companionship is seen as a sign of religious harmony.
The temple is open only on the first day of every Malayalam month, on the days of mandala pooja which marks the end of the 41-day fast, and festive occasions such as Makaravilakku or Makar Sankranti, and Vishu. The strenuous trek is to be undertaken through the forest or the route from Pamba which is less physically challenging. During this time, Mandala-Makaravilakku Mahotsavam is observed in temples across the state.
